While COVID is life-ending for some people, most people do recover from it. However, COVID-19 can also include some long-term effects that can have a serious impact on your life. We are learning about the many other ways COVID-19 can affect a person even after recovering from the main symptoms.

Here are some of the conditions you can experience from a COVID aftermath.

Lingering Symptoms

Some people recover from COVID quite quickly, but others may have symptoms that linger for weeks and months. Even young, healthy people have experienced these lingering symptoms according to the Mayo Clinic:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Pounding heartbeat
  • Problems with sleep, memory, or concentration,
  • Rash or hair loss

COVID and Organ Damage

COVID-19 primarily impacts the lungs, but it can damage other organs. COVID-19 aftermath has been seen to affect:

  • Lungs. There is a type of pneumonia associated with the virus that can damage the alveoli (air sacs) in the long. This results in scar tissue that may cause long-term breathing issues. Long-term breathing problems can impact your ability to participate in sports, exercise, and daily activities
  • Brain. COVID-19 has been associated with several brain problems including seizures, stroke, and Guillain-Barre syndrome (temporary paralysis). It may also increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
  • Heart. Imaging of the heart after recovery from COVID-19 has shown long-term damage to the heart muscle. This damage has been shown to exist months after recovery and even in people with mild symptoms. Damage to the heart can increase the risk of complications or heart failure.

Blood Clots

COVID makes blood cells more susceptible to clumping and clotting, and blood clots can cause strokes and heart attacks. However, the damage from COVID-19 is most often associated with small clots that block blood vessels in the heart. The blood clots can also impact your legs, liver, lungs, and kidneys. Weakened blood vessels may also cause long-lasting liver or kidney problems.

Serious Long-Term Effects of COVID

The aftermath of COVID is a serious matter that we are just now beginning to understand more about. Even after recovering from the virus, people of all ages and health statuses have shown serious long-term complications. All of the conditions that occur after COVID-19 can impact your overall health and wellbeing, disrupt your daily life, and make physical activity unpleasant or even dangerous. Recovering from COVID-19 should not be taken lightly, and you must be vigilant in addressing the potential long-term damage from COVID.
